About Tile Rummy
Tile Rummy is the classic numbered-tile rummy game, played in the browser with friends or against computer players. There are 106 tiles: the numbers 1 to 13 in four colours, two of each, and two jokers. Everyone starts with 14 tiles on their own rack, which only they can see. On your turn you lay sets on the shared table: a run is three or more numbers in a row in one colour, like a red 4, 5 and 6, and a group is one number in three or four different colours, like a blue, orange and black 9.
Your first play has to add up to 30 points or more from your own tiles. After that the whole table is yours to work with: split a long run, take a tile from a group to start a new one, add to the ends, as long as every set is whole again when you press Done. If you cannot play, or would rather wait, you draw a tile and the turn passes. The first player to empty their rack wins. Up to four people play at once, from their own phones or computers, and computer players fill any empty seat, so it works for one person as well as a full table.
How to Play Tile Rummy
Tile Rummy Rules
- There are 106 tiles: 1 to 13 in red, blue, orange and black, two of each, and two jokers. Every player gets 14 tiles.
- A run is 3 or more numbers in a row in one colour (red 4, 5, 6). A group is 3 or 4 tiles of one number in different colours (blue, orange and black 9). 13 does not go round to 1.
- A joker stands in for any tile in a set.
- Your first play must be worth 30 points or more, made only from your own tiles. Each tile counts its number.
- After your first play you can rearrange the table: move tiles between sets, split sets, start new ones. Every tile that was on the table stays on it, and every set must be whole when you press Done.
- If you do not play, draw one tile. That ends your turn. Each turn has two minutes; when time runs out you draw a tile.
- The first player with an empty rack wins and earns 25 points. If the tiles to draw run out and nobody can play, the lowest rack wins (a joker left on your rack counts 30).
Tips to Win
- Hold on to a joker until it finishes a set you could not make otherwise.
- Look at the table before you draw. A single tile often fits at the end of a run or into a group of three.
- Splitting a long run in two can make room for one tile you could not place before.
- Watch how many tiles the others hold. When someone is down to two or three, play out what you can.
- Sort your rack by colour to spot runs, and by number to spot groups.
Best for
Tile Rummy is for anyone who grew up with a box of number tiles on the kitchen table: families, grandparents and grandchildren on a video call, friends who want a calm game that still takes thinking. It is easy to learn in one round, it rewards planning, and with computer players it works just as well when you are on your own.
