MODULE: GUESSMYNUMBER

Guess My Number

Guess My Number is the browser version of the number-on-your-forehead party game that spread across Instagram and TikTok. Everyone in the lobby is dealt a unique secret number. You can see every number in the room except your own, and on your turn you may ask exactly one question that the rest of the group can answer with nothing but yes or no.

Because every question and every answer is public, the room slowly builds a shared map of what each player has ruled out, and the winner is usually the player who asked the most efficient questions rather than the luckiest one. First person to name their own number takes the match.

Rules of Engagement

  • 01The host picks a number range: 1 to 20 for fast rounds, 1 to 50 for the classic game, or 1 to 100 for a long one.
  • 02Every player is dealt a unique secret number from that range. Your own card shows a question mark; everyone else can see your number.
  • 03Players take turns. On your turn you ask exactly one question about your own number that can be answered with yes or no.
  • 04Everyone else looks at your number and answers honestly by tapping yes or no. The full tally is shown to the whole room, so every answer becomes public information.
  • 05After the answers land you may either guess your number or pass the turn. A wrong guess is announced to the room and ends your turn.
  • 06The first player to correctly name their own number wins the match.

Strategic Intelligence

  • Halve the range with every question. "Is my number above 25?" removes half the possibilities; "Is my number 17?" removes one.
  • Comparison questions are the strongest opener. Asking whether your number is higher than the ones you can see anchors you against numbers you already know.
  • Every question and answer is public, so track what your rivals have ruled out. If someone knows their number is even and above 40, you know which values are no longer available to you.
  • Do not guess early. A wrong guess costs the rest of your turn and hands the room a free elimination.
  • Answer other players honestly. Everyone can see the same number you can, so a wrong answer is spotted immediately and only slows the game down.

Tactical Suitability

Guess My Number is for groups who like deduction without heavy rules. It works as a warm-up before a longer game, as an icebreaker for a group meeting for the first time, and as a genuine puzzle for players who enjoy narrowing a search space efficiently. It needs no reading speed, no drawing, and no trivia knowledge, so mixed-age groups can all play on equal footing.

Technical Protocol Assistance

No. Your own card shows a question mark for the whole match. Everyone else in the lobby can see your number, which is exactly why you have to ask them about it.

Two to ten. Two players works fine because each of you can see the other, and larger rooms make each answer tally more interesting.

No. Every number dealt is unique, which is what makes comparison questions like "is mine the highest you can see" answerable.

Your guess is announced to the room and your turn ends. The match keeps going, so a wrong guess costs you tempo rather than the game.

They can watch the board, then get dealt a number when the host deals the next match. A number handed out mid-match would not be consistent with the answers already given.
