Imposter Game: Play Online with Friends
The imposter game is a word game for three or more players. Everyone gets the same secret word except one player, the imposter, who has to fake it. Players take turns giving a short clue about the word, talk it over, and then answer one question: who is the imposter? A clue that is too obvious hands the word to the imposter, and one that is too vague makes you look like the imposter yourself.
On Game Night Central the imposter word game runs in the browser for free, so you can play it online with friends. The host opens a room and shares the 4-letter code, and everyone joins on their own phone, tablet or laptop, around one table or spread out over a video call. The game deals the secret to every screen except the imposter's, times each clue, counts the votes and keeps score, so nobody has to sit out to run it. With 6 or more players there are two imposters, and besides single words you can play with short situations or with real objects you have nearby.

How to Play Imposter
- The host opens a room, shares the code and picks how to play: Words, Sentences or Objects, with an optional themed word pack. You need at least 3 players to start.
- Keep your screen to yourself and press "I'm ready". Once everyone has, the secret shows on every screen except the imposter's, which says "You're the imposter!" instead.
- Players give clues one at a time, in a shuffled order. On your turn you have 15 seconds to type one short clue without saying the secret. If the clock runs out, your turn is skipped.
- Every clue stays on screen while the group gets one minute to talk it over. Whose clue does not quite fit?
- Then the vote: "Who's the imposter?" Everyone taps one player within 45 seconds, and votes not in by then do not count.
- The player with the most votes is voted out, and the results show the secret and whether the imposter was caught. The host starts the next round with a new secret and newly dealt roles.
A Sample Round
Five friends play a round in Words mode: Maya, Leo, Priya, Sam and Jordan. The secret word is Pineapple, and Sam's screen says "You're the imposter!" instead. The shuffled order puts Sam third.
- LeoTropical
- MayaSpiky
- SamSmoothieThe imposter, guessing from the two clues before
- PriyaPizza topping
- JordanCrownOnly makes sense if you know the word
In the talk, Priya says Smoothie would fit almost any fruit. Sam asks what Crown has to do with anything, which only makes the others more sure: a pineapple has a crown. Four players vote for Sam and Sam votes for Jordan, so Sam is out. Sam was the imposter, so Maya, Leo, Priya and Jordan score 1 point each.
Rules of Engagement
- 01You need at least 3 players. With 3 to 5 players there is one imposter; with 6 or more there are two, and neither is told who the other is.
- 02Everyone except the imposter gets the same secret: a word, a short situation or a topic, depending on the mode.
- 03Each player gives one clue per round, on their turn, and the clue must not say the secret itself.
- 04Everyone gets one vote, the imposter included, and a vote cannot be changed. The player with the most votes is voted out.
- 05If that player is an imposter, everyone who is not an imposter scores 1 point. If it is anyone else, or the vote is a tie, each imposter scores 2.
- 06There is no last guess at the word: an imposter wins the round only by getting through the vote.
- 07The first player to reach 10 points wins the game.
Strategic Intelligence
- If you know the word, give a clue that only makes sense to someone else who knows it. Crown says more about Pineapple than Fruit does, and tells the imposter less.
- Do not make it too easy. Once the clues spell the word out, the imposter can pick up the theme and blend in.
- In the talk, look for the safest clue. The imposter has to stay general, and often echoes or bends a clue that came before theirs.
- If you are the imposter, listen to every clue before your turn and give one that fits all of them.
- If your turn as the imposter comes first, keep it broad, like a feeling or a place, and use the clues that follow to work out the word before the talk.
- As the imposter, ask about other people's clues in the talk instead of defending your own. A calm question looks less guilty than a long explanation.
Tactical Suitability
For friends, families and coworkers who like talking games such as Mafia, Werewolf or Spyfall, and for anyone who wants a party game with no cards to print and nothing to set up. It works with everyone around one table and just as well with a group spread over a video call or a Discord voice channel. A round takes a few minutes, so it fits a short break as easily as a long game night.
