MODULE: FOOSBALL

Foosball

Foosball is table football tuned for a browser: you steer your rods and time the swings. Each side owns four rods - goalie, defence, midfield and attack - shared out among whoever is on that side. On your own you hold all four; in a 2v2 one of you takes Goalie and Defence while the other takes Midfield and Attack, so every player really does have their own rows of figures; with four on a side everyone gets a single row.

Your rods slide together toward wherever you point, with the mouse over the table, a drag on a touch screen, or the W/S and arrow keys. Swinging is a single press per rod: tap it on the table, hit its button under the table, or press its number key (1 to 4 for the left side, 7 to 0 for the right). Swing with the ball in reach and a figure fires it toward the other goal, angled by where on the figure it connected.

Swing at nothing and the row lifts for a moment, and a lifted row is exactly what a ball rolls straight through, so an early swing at the goalie is how most goals go in. Figures that are not swinging block the ball like walls, kicks get faster the longer the ball has been moving, a dead ball is re-served to the side that did not touch it last, and the first side to five goals wins.

It plays four ways from the same lobby: online one-on-one against a friend on their own device, teams of up to four a side when the room is bigger than a pair, local two-player on one keyboard with 1-4 against 7-0, or solo against a bot the host can add with one click. A match takes a few minutes, which makes it a good tiebreaker between longer games.

Rules of Engagement

  • 01Two sides, one ball, first to 5 goals. Everyone on the winning side earns 25 points.
  • 02Each side owns four rods: goalie, defence, midfield and attack, laid out like a real table so the rows alternate down the pitch.
  • 03With more than two people in the room the host assigns teams first, and each side shares its four rods back to front: in a 2v2 one player holds Goalie and Defence and the other holds Midfield and Attack, and with four a side everyone holds one row.
  • 04You steer only your own rods: they slide together toward wherever you point with the mouse, a drag on touch, or the W/S and arrow keys.
  • 05A rod nobody is on - the bot, or a side nobody took - tracks the ball by itself, a beat late. A quick shot beats those rows before they have moved.
  • 06Swing a rod by tapping it on the table, pressing its button under the table, or hitting its number key. Left side: 1, 2, 3, 4. Right side: 7, 8, 9, 0. Space swings every rod you own at once.
  • 07A swing with the ball within reach of one of its figures fires the ball toward the other goal. Hitting the edge of a figure angles the shot up or down, a rod still sliding brushes it sideways, and the middle of a still figure sends it straight.
  • 08A swing with nothing in reach still lifts the whole row for a moment, and the ball rolls straight through a lifted row.
  • 09Figures that are not swinging block the ball. Each rod needs a short moment to reset after a swing before it can swing again.
  • 010Kicks build speed: a moving ball comes off a figure faster than a still one, up to a cap.
  • 011A ball that stops rolling is re-served from the centre to the side that did not touch it last. After a goal, the side that conceded gets the serve.
  • 012Play online 1v1, in teams of up to four a side, locally on one keyboard, or solo against the bot. The host kicks off, assigns teams, can add or remove the bot, and can end or rematch.

Strategic Intelligence

  • Swing late, not early. The ball has to be at the rod when the row moves, and an early swing lifts the row just as the ball arrives.
  • Shoot the moment a figure catches the ball. Every row on the table reacts late, so a ball that is already flying is much harder to stop than one that sat still first.
  • Read the figure, not the ball. A ball at the top edge of a figure goes up, at the bottom edge goes down, in the middle goes straight - which is the easiest shot to block.
  • Your goalie clears the whole table. One clean touch from the back sends the ball past three rows before anyone can react.
  • Do not spam the attack rod. Each swing has a reset, and a rod that is resetting cannot block either.
  • Against the bot, bank the ball off the side wall. The bot reacts to where the ball is, not where it is going.
  • On one keyboard, put your fingers on all four keys before kick-off. Reaching for a number is how the other side scores.
  • In a 2v2, let the back two clear and the front two finish. Both of you swinging at the same ball just lifts two rows at once and leaves a hole.

Tactical Suitability

Foosball is for people who want a duel that starts in five seconds and is over in five minutes: a tiebreaker between longer games, a couch match on one keyboard, or a solo warm-up against the bot. It needs no reading, typing or drawing, works with one thumb on a phone, and rewards timing over reflexes, so a first-time player can beat a regular with a well-judged goalie clearance.

Module FAQ

Technical Protocol Assistance

Point at the table: your four rods slide together toward the mouse, a drag on a touch screen, or wherever you steer them with the W/S or arrow keys. The bot and any unmanned side track the ball on their own.

Yes. In a room bigger than a pair the host is asked to assign teams, and each side shares its four rods: a 2v2 gives one player Goalie and Defence and the other Midfield and Attack, so you each steer and swing your own rows from your own device. A side holds up to four, which makes eight at the table.

Yes. With nobody on the right side, the host kicks off a local match: the left side uses the 1-4 keys and the right side uses 7-0, or both players tap their own rods on a touch screen.

Yes. The host can add a bot to the right seat. It swings whenever the ball reaches one of its rods, after a short reaction delay, so it is beatable with angled shots and wall bounces.

Because the goalie was mid-swing. A swinging row is lifted and does not block, so a swing with nothing in reach opens a gap for a moment. Wait for the ball to arrive before swinging.

First to five goals, which usually takes three to six minutes.

Yes. Everyone in the lobby picks a side and plays from their own device. Whoever leads the left side runs the table and streams it to everyone else many times a second.
